It’s the time of year when we start preparing to aerate and overseed our lawns. Fall is the ideal time in The Carolina’s to aerate, fertilize, and overseed our lawns.
For Fescue lawns, we aerate the turf, spread a tall fescue blend of grass seed specially formulated for our area, and apply a coat of starter fertilizer to help the seed germinate. ForFescue seed, it takes between 7 to 15 days to germinate, which is why we normally skip a week of mowing directly after overseeding to give the seed time to get established.
For some of our customers with Bermuda or Zoysia Grass we typically aerate the turf, spread a rye grass seed to give a nice green carpet of grass during the dormant season of these grasses. At this time we also apply a coating of fertilizer to help get the rye grass started, as well as to feed the warm season grass as it enters dormancy.
